Q: What is the purpose?
A: Enhancing Skills of Paraeducators (ESP) is designed to improve the competencies of paraeducators working in special or inclusive education settings in grades K-12.

Q: Who is the audience?
A: Trainees can be entry-level paraeducators, Title I assistants, 504 assistants, other paraprofessionals, transition specialists, community college students or others interested in paraeducation.

Q: Who can deliver instruction?
A: The instructor can be a teacher experienced in supervising paraeducators, a staff development specialist, other school administrator, or a community college faculty member. ESP is designed so that an instructor can read the Facilitator’s Guide and the Introduction and immediately begin delivering instruction.

Q: What training format can be used?
A: ESP can be delivered in a small group format in school district inservice training or in a community college course. Other delivery formats are possible, including distance education to small groups and self-guided study.

Q: What purpose does the video serve?
A: Video scenes illustrate classroom situations in which paraeducators interact with teachers or other school personnel. Video exercises allow small groups to discuss how to respond in various situations.

Q: What skills are addressed?
A: ESP addresses skills and knowledge related to interacting with students who have different characteristics, IEP participation, legislation, ethical conduct, assistive technology, roles and responsibilities, communication, data collection, documentation, behavioral intervention, task analysis, skill assessment, delivering effective instruction, and monitoring student instruction.

Q: What program materials are included?
A: ESP includes a manual and five videotapes.
