ESP Table of Contents

Pareducators need a variety of skills to work with students who have special needs. Those paraeducators who receive comprehensive training become valuable participants in the educational process. Enhancing the Skills of Paraeducators is designed to provide some of those skills. Before redesigning this curriculum, we surveyed consumers using ESP in 50 states to gather their suggestion. The 2nd edition of the program reflects their recommendations.

UNIT 1: Educating Students with Disabilities: Goals and Implications
(provides general informaton regarding the disabilities and capabilities of people with special needs, the history of special education and the IEP process.)
UNIT 2: A Paraeducator's Role in the Educational Workforce
(a brief review of common activities of paraeducators, knowledge and skills required, coordinating with the teacher, and guidelines for ethical conduct.)
UNIT 3: Strengthening Communication Skills
(emphasizes communication skills and teaches paraeducators how to interact more effectively with other members of a child's educational team, families of students and persons of divers cultures and ethnic backgrounds.)
UNIT 4: Strengthening Behavior
(basic principles of behavior and the assessment and management of student behavior.)
UNIT 5: Strengthening Skills with Effective Instruction
(provides paraeducators with techniques for teaching students with mild to severe disabilities.)
